About
About Plankwell Flooring
Plankwell Flooring spends the first day on the part that decides everything: flattening the subfloor, testing moisture and letting the material acclimate. It is the reason our floors do not cup, gap or squeak a year later. We contain the dust, we move the furniture, we handle the stairs and transitions properly, and we take the old flooring away with us.
What we do
Flooring work in Milton
Hardwood, vinyl, tile and stairs installed over a subfloor that has been levelled and moisture tested. Plankwell Flooring will move the furniture and haul the old floor away.
Hardwood installation
Solid and engineered hardwood installed over a flat, dry, moisture-tested subfloor, racked so the seams and lengths look random instead of striped.
Sanding & refinishing
Bring existing hardwood back with dust-contained sanding and a hard-wearing waterborne finish — usually half the cost of replacing it.
Luxury vinyl plank & laminate
Waterproof LVP and quality laminate for basements, kitchens and rentals, with the underlay and expansion gaps the warranty actually requires.
Tile & heated floors
Porcelain and natural stone over an uncoupling membrane, with in-floor heat mats and a thermostat wired in for bathrooms and entries.
Stairs, treads & nosing
Carpeted stairs converted to hardwood with proper treads, risers and returns, finished to match the floor they land on.
Subfloor levelling & moisture testing
Flatten humps and dips with self-levelling compound and test slab moisture first, because most flooring failures start under the floor.
Carpet & broadloom
Bedrooms, basements and stair runners installed over quality underpad and power-stretched so it does not ripple in a year.
Baseboard, quarter round & transitions
Trim, thresholds and transitions between rooms finished so the floor looks intentional at every doorway.
Questions
Asked and answered
- Should I refinish my hardwood or replace it?
- If there is at least a few millimetres of wear layer above the tongue and the boards are sound, refinishing is cheaper, faster and keeps a floor you cannot buy any more. Replace when the boards are cupped from water damage, sanded down to the nails, or it is engineered with a paper-thin veneer. We check thickness in an inconspicuous spot before advising either way.
- How long does the job take, and can we stay in the house?
- A typical install is two to four days per floor. Refinishing is three to five days including cure time, and you should plan to be out or confined to another level for at least the finishing days. We can sequence the work by floor so there is always somewhere to sleep, and we will tell you the realistic timeline, not the optimistic one.
- Does the flooring need to acclimate first?
- Yes for solid hardwood — several days in the room, in the box opened, at normal living temperature and humidity. Skipping acclimation is how you get gaps in February or buckling in August. Engineered and LVP are more forgiving but still want a day or two. We deliver in advance rather than installing off the truck.
- Engineered or solid hardwood?
- Solid can be refinished more times and suits main and upper floors. Engineered is more dimensionally stable, which makes it the right answer over concrete slabs, over in-floor heat, and in basements. A good engineered floor with a thick wear layer will outlast a cheap solid one, so the wear layer matters more than the label.
- What is the best flooring with pets and kids?
- Waterproof luxury vinyl plank is the most forgiving — scratch-resistant, and spills are a non-event. If you want real wood, choose a harder species and a matte finish, because gloss shows every scratch. Wide plank white oak with a matte waterborne finish is the usual compromise between looks and reality.
- Do you move furniture and take away the old flooring?
- We move furniture and appliances, and we haul the old flooring away and dispose of it — both are in the quote, not surprise extras. What we ask you to handle is anything fragile, electronics and the contents of closets.
