Dundurn Cabinet Co. at work

About

A shop, four people, and a lot of white oak

Nadia Kovac finished her Red Seal in 2011 and spent three years building millwork for other people's projects before opening Dundurn Cabinet Co. in a Barton Street unit in 2014. We're four: Nadia, two cabinetmakers and Ben who installs. Everything is drawn in the house first, because Hamilton's century homes are gloriously out of square and a stock cabinet will show you exactly how much. Boxes are Baltic birch, faces are solid maple, oak or ash from Ontario mills, and the hinges are Blum because we're not interested in coming back to fix a door in five years. We take about twelve kitchens a year. That's the number we can do properly.

What we do

Custom cabinetry work in Hamilton

Kitchens built on Barton Street, not shipped in a flat pack

  • Custom kitchens

Designed in your house, built in ours. Baltic birch boxes, solid hardwood faces, Blum hardware, finished in a spray booth rather than a driveway.

    From $18,000

  • Built-ins & bookcases

Fireplace surrounds, window seats, and wall-to-wall shelving scribed to plaster walls that haven't been plumb since 1912.

    From $4,200

  • Islands & butcher block

Islands with real overhang support, plus hard maple and walnut counters finished for food use and easy to re-oil yourself.

    From $3,600

  • Cabinet refacing & new doors

When the boxes are sound, new solid doors, drawer fronts and hardware cost a third of a new kitchen and take a week instead of ten.

    From $6,500

  • Bathroom vanities

Floating and furniture-style vanities in moisture-stable materials, sized to the awkward space you actually have.

    From $2,400

  • Closets & mudrooms

Bench, hooks, boot storage and closet systems built in rather than bolted on, in finishes that match the rest of the house.

  • Repairs & alterations

Rebuilt drawer boxes, new hinges, a cabinet cut down for a new fridge. Small jobs keep the shop honest and we're glad to take them.

  • Our 1908 kitchen has no square corner anywhere and two previous quotes basically said 'we'll fill the gaps with trim'. Nadia measured for two hours and drew a kitchen that fits the room. The install was three days and there is not one gap anywhere.

  • We didn't need a new kitchen, we needed new doors, and Dundurn was the only shop willing to say that out loud. New solid maple doors and drawer fronts, painted, one week. It looks like a $30,000 kitchen and it was not.

  • Media wall and two window seats. Ben scribed the whole run into a wall that bows badly and you genuinely cannot see it. They also delivered on the day they'd said back in February.

    Grant M. · Ancaster · Google

  • Walnut vanity for an awkward little powder room. It's the nicest piece of furniture in the house and it cost less than the box store's melamine option once we'd added the drawers we wanted.

    Sylvie L. · Stoney Creek · Instagram

  • Beautiful kitchen, worth the wait — and it was a wait. Ten weeks became thirteen because of a hardwood delay. They were upfront about it each time we asked, but we'd have liked a heads up before we had to ask.

Questions

Asked and answered

What does a custom kitchen actually cost?
Most of our Hamilton kitchens land between $18,000 and $38,000 for cabinetry, depending on size, finish and hardware. Counters, appliances and plumbing are separate and we'll tell you what those usually run so the whole number isn't a surprise.
How long does it take?
Eight to ten weeks from approved drawings to installation, and installation itself is two to four days. We hold a schedule of about twelve kitchens a year so we're often booking two to three months out.
Is refacing worth it?
If the boxes are solid and the layout works, absolutely — new solid doors, fronts and hardware for roughly a third of a full kitchen. If the boxes are particleboard that's swollen under the sink, it isn't, and we'll tell you.
Can you match existing woodwork?
Usually. Bring us a drawer, an offcut of baseboard or even a good photo in daylight and we'll match species, profile and stain. Century-home trim is a big part of what we do.
Do you handle plumbing, electrical and counters?
We install cabinetry and millwork, and we coordinate with the trades — we have a plumber, an electrician and a stone shop we've worked with for years. You can use yours instead; we'll just work to their schedule.
What do you need from me to quote?
Rough dimensions and a few photos gets you a realistic range within three working days. Then we come out, measure properly, and the quote after that is the one we hold to.
