Our main stack backed up on the Saturday of a family party. Luigi was here within the hour, had the camera down the drain, showed me the roots on the screen and cleared it before the food came out. He wouldn't take a cent extra for the weekend. Twenty people ate dinner in that house because of him.
Rental water heater buyout. They put what the rental company would charge to end the contract, what an owned tank costs and what the payback was on one page, and left it with me. No pressure either way. Installed the following Tuesday — drip tray, expansion tank, all of it.
Full re-plumb of a 1970s bathroom while we were living in the house. Mario's crew put floor protection down at the front door every single morning, and the quote didn't move a dollar between the first page and the invoice.
Our boiler was short-cycling and two other companies just wanted to sell us a conversion to forced air. These two found a stuck zone valve, replaced it for a couple of hundred dollars, and we've had another five winters out of that boiler.
Good work on a gas line for a garage heater. They had to come back a second time because the inspection got booked late, which was a nuisance, but they told me the truth about why and didn't charge me for the return trip.
Second generation, same shop, same phone number
Giuseppe Farina came out from Campobasso in 1971, apprenticed in Toronto, and opened his own shop on Whitmore Road in 1986 with one Ford van and a Yellow Pages ad. Mario got his 306A in 2004 and Luigi in 2007, and the two of them took the business over when Papa retired in 2014. There are seven of us now and Papa still comes in on Tuesdays to complain about how we load the vans. What hasn't changed: we price the job and not the hour, we tell you when a repair will do instead of a replacement, and if we're going to be late you get a phone call rather than silence.
